Five Things You Should Do If You Suspect Your Spouse Is Going To File For A Divorce

You have a good idea that your spouse is about to file for a divorce. Instead of panicking, here are five things you can do:

  1. Start researching who to use as your attorney.

There are many divorce attorneys on Long Island you can choose from. You can ask your friends and family who they recommend. You can do research on-line. You can call the local Bar Association. When interviewing a potential attorney, you want to make sure that they specialize in divorces.

  1. Get copies of your financial documents.

You should start obtaining copies of your financial statements, including: bank statements, recent tax returns, insurance statements, investment statements, deeds, wills, etc. You should make at least two copies of these financial statements and have them ready for your attorney.

  1. Save your text messages and emails, and start printing them out.

You probably have lots of incriminating text messages and emails from your spouse.  Now is the time to make sure they are saved and to start printing them out.

  1. Take pictures of any property you think is valuable or that you want to preserve.

All too often, your spouse may start taking personal property from the residence. You should start taking pictures of any personal property that you think is valuable or that you want to preserve.

  1. Open up a separate bank account.

You are permitted to open up a separate bank account. You should do this at a bank that you do not currently bank with.  You should put the minimum amount in the account.  You may eventually need this separate bank account to put in your wages or other sources of income.
