Getting Divorced: Change Your Email Password Now and Other Computer Tips

David P. Badanes, Esq.

If you are getting divorced or thinking of getting divorced, you must immediately change all your email passwords. You also need to immediately change passwords to all of your social media accounts (e.g., Facebook, Linkedin). You should also immediately change the passwords to:

•  Your computer (including laptops)
•  Your tablets (Ipad, etc.)
•  Your smartphone (Iphone, etc.)

If during the divorce, you and your spouse are still living together, then it is especially important to change the passwords and access to your computers, cell phone, tablets, and any other electronic device. All too often, your spouse will secretly access to your email and these devices and gain important and sensitive information.

When changing your password, try to use a password that your spouse will not guess. So do not use your pet’s name, your mother’s maiden name, your sibling’s names or anything that is obvious and known to your spouse. A good password is a sentence or phrase, that is nonsensical, but that is easy to remember. For example if you like horses and the color blue, you could use: “HorsesAreBlue”. Alternatively, if you really don’t like Broccoli, you could use: “BroccoliIsBad”.

If you are getting divorced, there are many issues, such as emails and access to computers that you may not think of. The Badanes Law Office has helped numerous clients in their divorce and making sure that they are protected.
